What is Laser Hair Removal?

Firstly, the phrase “laser hair removal” is a bit of a misnomer in that, in most cases, the procedure doesn’t fully remove your hair permanently. In reality, laser hair removal in Plymouth works by providing permanent hair reduction. This means that, on occasion, patients may need to come into our office in Wayzata for touch-up treatments.

Using laser hair removal is a popular option for thousands of men and women across the Twin Cities, and for millions of people across the United States. Why? Because the procedure works to neutralize hair growth at a much more effective rate than other methods, essentially creating a semi-permanent solution.

While shaving works to cut parts of the hair shaft (causing that prickly feeling you get after shaving) and waxing pulls hair from the root, laser hair removal treats the issue of hair growth at its source. Our providers use controlled wavelengths of laser energy, to target the hair follicle. Once in the skin, that laser energy is absorbed by the melanin, and the hair follicle is destroyed.

When that energy turns into heat, it damages the hair’s growth area without harming any of the surrounding areas. Because the growth area is damaged at its source, hair won’t grow back in the area as effectively. That’s why the term  “laser hair removal” effectively means permanent hair reduction.

The Hair Growth Cycle

To get a better understanding of how laser hair removal in Plymouth will work permanently, we need to talk about the hair growth cycle. We won’t give you too much of a science lesson, but a quick overview of the “why” behind the hair growth cycle is very helpful prior to your treatment.

Although it may sometimes seem like it, your hair doesn’t actually grow and shed all at the same  time. In fact, your hair actually grows in phases, and not all follicles are in the same phase at the same time. Only during one specific phase is the follicle susceptible to the laser. This means that different hair follicles will remain during different phases of your hair growth cycle, which will mean that multiple treatments are necessary to achieve the permanent hair reduction you’re looking for.

The hair growth cycle happens in three phases.

Phase 1️⃣ Active Growing (AKA the Anagen Phase)

The Anagen phase is known as the “active growing” phase of your hair growth cycle, when the hair bulb is still intact. This is where laser hair removal is at its most effective, as the hair grows in multiple directions (both upward and downward) during this phase, and the hair bulb is the closest to your skin’s surface. Additionally, the Anagen Phase is also when your hair contains a large quantity of melanin (which can be more easily targeted by the laser device).

Phase 2️⃣ Regression (AKA the Catagen Phase)

The Catagen Phase is the short, intermediate phase that occurs after Anagen and before Telogen (the final phase). During this phase, the body absorbs the lower third of the hair follicle and the lower part of the hair stops its growth, but hasn’t shed yet.

Phase 3️⃣ Resting (AKA the Telogen Phase)

During the Telogen Phase, the hair follicles are in what’s known as the “resting” period. This means that they no longer have their bulb, which leads to the creation of “club hair”. When the hair is in this stage, it will either fall out by itself or get pushed out by growing follicles.

As mentioned, laser hair removal in Plymouth will involve multiple treatment sessions. You won’t be able to permanently reduce all of your hair follicles at once, and you’ll likely even notice hair growing back afterwards. Laser hair removal can only target hair during the Anagen Phase, and because your hair doesn’t all grow in the same cycle, you’ll need more than one session.

However, as you continue your initial treatments and as your follicles move through the cycle, you’ll notice less and less hair growth. In some cases, hair doesn’t return at all! This, in particular, is what makes laser hair removal more effective and far less time consuming than other common hair removal methods. Because of this, we see patients from all across the Twin Cities visit our clinic for permanent hair reduction.

One of the best attributes of laser hair removal isn’t just it’s effectiveness, however. The procedure is highly versatile and you can use it to treat several different areas of the body!  Treatment areas include:

  • Face
  • Legs
  • Underarms
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Bikini area
  • And more

That said, laser hair removal in Plymouth won’t be the ideal treatment for everyone. You should always speak to a professional to ensure that the treatment is the best option for you.

Our team at Vively Body Science will meet with you for an initial consultation to better understand your needs, concerns, and goals for treatment. If you’re a good candidate, our aestheticians and skincare specialists will help you determine the number of treatments needed for your ideal outcome!

Laser Hair Removal Options at Vively Body Science

At our clinic near Plymouth, our laser specialists offer two different types of hair reduction treatments: Forever Bare BBL and ClearHair. If you’re a candidate for laser hair removal, our team will help you determine which of these two treatments is right for you.

Forever Bare BBL

Forever Bare BBL from Sciton is a non-invasive, virtually pain-free type of laser hair reduction that’s best suited for those with light or medium skin tones. Capable of eliminating future hair growth in several areas of the body, this BBL (Broadband Light) procedure utilizes a lower-fluency light at a high rate to achieve smoother skin for men and women.

After an initial consultation, you’ll be guided to one of our comfortable and clean treatment rooms for your procedure. What really sets this treatment apart isn’t just its comfortable nature, but also its ability to effectively deliver multiple lower fluence pulses at a high repetition rate.

This allows for even heating of the treatment areas while minimizing the number of missed areas. The treatment also differs from many laser hair removal methods, which tend to deliver all of their energy to a specific area at once.

Using a handheld piece, your clinician will guide the device to deliver lower-fluency light at a high rate onto the targeted area of unwanted hair. When providing energy in multiple bursts, our team is able to protect the skin and gradually increase the follicle temperature to a therapeutic level.

Meanwhile, the thermoelectrically cooled sapphire plate on the handpiece provides consistent cooling to provide a comfortable experience throughout. The end result? Effective elimination of future hair growth for beautifully smooth skin.

Once we finish with your procedure, we recommend that you use a mineral-based sunscreen on your treated areas. Though you can continue to shave if you’d like, we highly recommend that you don’t wax between your laser treatments.

Generally after a series of 6 to 8 Forever Bare treatments in Plymouth, patients can expect to see an 80% or higher reduction in hair.

ClearHair

ClearHair is an FDA-cleared hair reduction treatment that helps all of the same areas as Forever Bare BBL, but is more powerful and generally better suited for those with darker skin. Not only is ClearHair a safe and effective hair reduction solution, it’s an innovative technology that we can also use to treat vascular lesions and ingrown hairs.

During your treatment, the ClearHair device will focus energy onto unwanted hair follicles, killing the hair and reducing the chance of future growth. What makes ClearHair particularly effective for laser hair removal in Plymouth is its 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength and pulse duration. This particular technology allows for selective heating of the hair follicles while simultaneously cooling the treatment area throughout the process.

When applied along with its large area pattern generator (LAPG), the procedure allows for a high-speed, non-sequential delivery that applies complete, even coverage of the treatment area. This combination makes it not only a powerful treatment, but a comfortable one as well!

The aftercare instructions associated with ClearHair are essentially the same as those with Forever Bare BBL. You’ll use a mineral-based sunscreen on your treated area, with the same recommendation that you do not wax following your treatment. Similarly, you can expect to see the full results of your treatment within 6 to 8 weeks!

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal

We know that this can be a lot of information to take in at once, and that you may have questions about laser hair removal in Plymouth. Here are some of the most common questions that we get from patients considering laser hair reduction.

How do I know if I’ll need Forever Bare BBL or ClearHair?

To get an accurate determination on which treatment is best for you, our laser hair removal specialists begin each of our treatment series with an initial consultation. We’ll work collaboratively with you to guide you to the right option based on your concerns!

Should I shave or wax before my treatment?

We ask that you please shave the day before your treatment in order to get the best outcome. However, you should avoid waxing or tweezing for at least 4 weeks before your treatment.

When is the best time of year to get laser hair removal in Plymouth?

Most patients who visit Vively tend to start their laser hair removal series during the wintertime. Going on vacation, going to the gym, or even taking a hot shower can increase the risk of bacteria growing in the area. Not to mention, being out in the sun puts you at risk of a painful sunburn post-treatment. This gives you enough time to complete your series before your fun in the sun.

When can I expect to see results?

Though we generally say that it takes 6 to 8 weeks to see the full results of your treatment, the truth is that it will vary by patient. Both the location of your hair removal and the thickness of the hair will play a factor in when you’ll see the full results. Once we see your for your consultation, we can help set better expectations based on your unique goals.

Is laser hair removal safe and permanent?

Yes, the laser hair removal process is completely safe, and often relatively comfortable! The treatment poses absolutely no threat to your health. And while some patients don’t experience any hair regrowth, the primary point of the treatment is long-term reduction of unwanted hair. To experience permanent hair reduction, our providers may recommend a maintenance treatment plan.

What should I do after receiving a laser hair removal treatment?

In addition to applying mineral-based sunscreen, we also recommend that you avoid any sun or UV exposure to your treatment area. This helps to minimize any hyperpigmentation (the darkening of the skin). And as previously stated, you should also avoid any heat to the area. This can include spas, saunas, steam rooms, and even hot showers. If you experience any discomfort after your treatment, you can manage this effectively with Tylenol.

Are there any side effects to laser hair removal?

The side effects of laser hair removal are rare and often minimal, but they may include issues such as skin irritation, blistering, temporary pigment changes, crusting, or changes in skin texture.
