Medical Microneedling in Wayzata: A Guide

Skin texture concerns can be difficult to improve without targeted skin treatments. Texture might be from acne or traumatic scarring, fine lines, or textural sun damage. These skin concerns may also have a negative effect on your confidence in your own skin, especially since texture is one of the more difficult conditions to cover up. The key to improving texture is improving the skin’s collagen production from within to rejuvenate the outer surface.

One of the best skin treatments for texture is microneedling. Microneedling is a skin resurfacing treatment that uses tiny microneedles to create controlled injuries. These injuries stimulate collagen production in your skin and help to renew the epidermis, the outer layer of your skin, for a smoother, brighter complexion. Cosmetic microneedling and medical microneedling beautifully rejuvenate your skin—all with little to no downtime.

At Vively Body Science, we are very fond of this often underrated treatment. Microneedling is a favorite treatment of Laurel Martini—physician and co-owner of Vively Body Science.

Below we discuss what you need to know about at-home cosmetic microneedling and medical microneedling in Wayzata at Vively Body Science.

The difference between cosmetic microneedling v. medical microneedling

Cosmetic microneedling

Cosmetic microneedling is an at-home treatment that uses uniform, micro short needles on a roller tool to stimulate the outer layers of the skin to produce collagen. At-home devices use needles that are even shorter than professional tools, so they won’t damage your skin, however  they are not as powerful as a medical microneedling device.

Cosmetic microneedling is not ideal for improving the appearance of deep traumatic or acne scars, as these concerns need deeper needle penetration to regenerate the skin layers. What cosmetic microneedling can do is help your skincare products penetrate and absorb better to boost your product results for the long-term, along with helping reduce fine lines and lighter scarring. After performing at-home microneedling, you can use non-irritating products like serums, peptides, and hydrating hyaluronic acid to boost your skin care.

Make sure your at-home microneedling device is high quality. We carry our favorite Environ brand cosmetic needling rollers at Vively. It’s also important to sanitize your roller often and correctly prepare your skin before treatment.

For the best results, make at-home cosmetic rolling a regular part of your home care routine  and understand how it will augment your skin care. Overall, cosmetic at-home microneedling is great for boosting the effectiveness of your skincare products and reducing the appearance of fine lines and light scarring.

Cosmetic microneedling is optimal for an ongoing at-home maintenance treatment to help create a more even complexion overall. If you’re looking to augment your cosmetic microneedling results or treat more significant texture concerns, consider medical microneedling treatments for the best results.

Medical microneedling

Trained skin professionals and physicians can perform medical microneedling. Microneedling is also known as percutaneous collagen induction, or PCI. It is a non-surgical treatment technique that uses fine, short, sterile needles to create tiny punctures, stimulating collagen production.

With medical microneedling, a professional uses a tool with adjustable depth, more powerful microneedles that penetrate deeper into the skin. At Vively Body Science, we are physicians and skin professionals with years of training and experience with microneedling, so we can ensure your skin’s safety and results.

Just like other types of professional services, for the most impactful results, a professional medical microneedling treatment is best.

Treatable conditions with medical microneedling in Wayzata

One of the best aspects of medical microneedling is that it is such a versatile treatment. It improves the following skin concerns:

  • Multiple types of scars to reduce redness, size, and appearance (including acne scars)
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Pore size and texture
  • Sun damage
  • Stretch marks

Don’t see your particular skin concern on this list? Contact us at Vively Body Science for a free skin consultation. Since microneedling helps produce collagen, it could also help your particular skin concerns not listed here.

If not, we have several other skin rejuvenation services available such as dermaplaning, chemical peels, and Halo laser. We can create a custom skin treatment plan for your individual goals and concerns.

Treatment Areas

We use medical microneedling primarily on the face, but we also can perform the treatment to add-on areas as requested.

Treatment areas include:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest / Décolleté

Many of our patients pair a neck microneedling treatment with a face treatment. This ensures continuity or blending between the areas’ appearance. The neck and decollete are often afterthoughts for skincare, but these areas get just as many if not more signs of aging, making them ideal to pair with facial microneedling.

The technology behind the Candela Exceed™ medical microneedling device

Candela Exceed™ is an advanced medical microneedling device. It is the first dual-indicated, FDA-cleared device for acne scar reduction and facial wrinkles. Its single-use, 6-needle tilting  cartridge attaches to the handpiece to provide adaptability across the skin’s surface and contours. This allows for a more consistent treatment and finish across the treatment area(s) for better microneedling results.

Other highlights about Candela Exceed™ for aging skin:

  • 90% of patients saw improvement in facial wrinkles
  • 78% saw improvement in periorbital wrinkles in 90 days

The benefits of medical microneedling

Safe procedure all year round

Medical microneedling in Wayzata at Vively is a safe procedure to get any time of the year. Certain treatments such as laser resurfacing can make your skin very sun-sensitive and require downtime away from the outdoors. This is not the case with microneedling.

While we always recommend you wear sunscreen, especially following your procedure for any sun exposure, your skin will not be overly sensitive, making it a great treatment for any season.

Low to minimal downtime

Similar to it being an ideal procedure all year long, you also do not need to block out a period for your skin to recover after microneedling. You will be able to get right back to your daily activities soon. Your skin will appear red or pink immediately after and may look dry or slightly flakey for up to 72 hours. We’ll only ask that you limit your time in public the day of treatment to avoid infection risk, and of course, not going in the sun without sunscreen following your treatment.

You’ll see your results after a few days, and you’ll even notice further progress after a couple of months.

Safe for most skin types

Unless you have active acne or another concern that makes your skin overly sensitive, medical microneedling is safe for most skin types. Whether you’re more dry, oily, or somewhere in the middle, you can safely get microneedling to improve your skin texture and smooth out your complexion.

Alternative to laser resurfacing

Though we’re no strangers to laser resurfacing treatments, Halo being one of our favorites, we understand some patients may avoid them for a variety of reasons. Laser treatments often call for some downtime or may not be safe for all skin tones. This makes medical microneedling a great skin laser alternative.

Microneedling does not use light to rejuvenate the skin like lasers, but stimulates the skin to produce more collagen manually through the micro-needles. In turn, this is a less harsh treatment on the skin.

Treatment Process | Medical Microneedling in Wayzata

Consultation

Before your treatment, you’ll meet with a microneedling specialist for a complimentary consultation to discuss your skin goals and how this treatment can help. Your specialist will examine the treatment area(s) and determine if microneedling is right for you.

Based on your skin consultation, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan that reflects your desired results. You may see results after one microneedling treatment, but most patients see the best results after 3 to 6 treatment sessions.

Prep and Treatment

20 to 30 minutes before your treatment, we will prep your skin with a topical numbing gel to help minimize any discomfort.

Your provider will use the industry-leading Candela Exceed™ device to treat the areas of your procedure.

Aftercare

Once we finish your medical microneedling treatment, we’ll go over specific guidelines for post-treatment care. We also ask that you stay out of the sun unless you have adequate sun protection.

In most instances, we recommend a series of medical microneedling treatments followed by maintenance microneedling treatments as needed. Our specialists can help you determine the most optimal schedule for your skin in a post-treatment examination.

Frequently Asked Questions | Medical Microneedling

How long does it take to see results from microneedling?

Many patients see some results within several days of their procedure. The progressive results of medical microneedling will continue to improve over the next several months.

Does microneedling help crepey skin?

Because it helps rebuild collagen, a protein that helps the structure of your skin, microneedling can also help crepey skin. We also have other treatments designed specifically for this concern, like SkinTyte. We can give you a more thorough treatment recommendation for crepey skin treatments during your skin consultation.

Is microneedling painful?

We use a topical anesthetic for this procedure to minimize any pain. Some patients report a slight stinging or vibration sense during treatment. Otherwise, most patients do not report substantial discomfort from microneedling.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects are pinkness and slight swelling of the area treated. These effects should completely subside within a few days.

Who is not a good candidate for microneedling?

Those who have active wounds, lesions, or healing issues should not get microneedling. Active cystic acne, cold sores, and other types of wounds are too sensitive to receive this treatment.
